Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes in the United States is getting out of control (it's increasing constantly), largely because of poor diet and lack of exercise. It's reaching a crisis stage. (I'm not familiar with the statistics in Canada and the UK, or other countries.)
Some families may follow a pattern of poor diets and sedentary lifestyles. In addition to genetics, you should look at those factors too. You can check the internet for this information, to get you started.
In addition to following your doctor's advice, you should review healthy natural choices. I find that non-processed foods are best for me, to maintain health and weight control. Years ago, I started an exercise program, and it has made a big difference in the way I feel everyday. More and more, I have found the role in preventative care so important.
