Eye Pain - Diabetes Message Board

my mom (age 62), who has had type II diabetes for about 3 years now, has been suffering from pain in her eye for 2 days...also has redness and swelling...but no "scratchy" feeling as if something were in her eye, no light sensitivity, just pain in her "eyeball" as she describes it...the doc does not know what it is and is treating her for conjunctivitis, which has decreased the redness, but not the pain....doc gave her lortab for the pain....what the heck could this be and could it be related to the diabetes?! thanks in advance for replies

If she hasn't already done so, she may want to see an ophthamologist (doctor who specializes in diseases of the eyes), although it doesn't sound like the type of problem typically caused by diabetes.

Sounds like it could be her sinuses behind her eye. Diabetic retinopathy typically does not cause pain..it causes you to lose your eyesight. I would recommend that she an ophthalmologist and not her regular MD and not an optometrist. Sometimes when your eyes are dry they can hurt also. She could use artificial tears. They are an over the counter drop several times a day and see if it helps. Diabetics are required to have a yearly dilated eye examination so the ophthalmologist can look at the back of her eye...if she has not done so she needs to. Hope this helps.
