Question about diabetes meds... - Diabetes Message Board

I do not have diabtes myself but have a friend who does,..and If my memory serves me correctly she was diagnosed with type 2 and placed on some type of meds..she was told if she was to lose some of her weight she would more than likely be able to get off of all of her meds...so she did..she did alter her way of eating and she began to exercise obsessively and lost 105 lbs in 7 months( which I still think was way too fast) but anyway...those of you with experience...would the medications that she was placed on ( I think it was to help rid her body of the sugars) have helped her shed the weight so quickly??

I'm newly diagnosed Type II and on Glucophage. As I understand it, some medications do help in taking some weight off. The pharmacist told me that Glucophage would cause me to lose some weight, and it has, about 35 pounds since June. I'd say she should check with her doc to see if this much weight loss that quick is good and if caused by medicine. Sure, my diet and exercise program has helped some as well.

I was on 2 mg Amaryl while I was on the overweight/obese BMI borderline. That was needed to help get my sugars down from about 170 to the less than 140 average range (7.0 or so). After I lost the first 20 lbs, the amaryl had to be dropped because my HbA1c was running in the 4.7 range and I was going pretty low in the afternoons. Since them, I have dropped another 30 lbs and my Type II diabetes is easily under control by diet/exercise.

I did not see any correlation between meds and weight loss. In fact, I was using the meds to "cheat" rather than exercise and lose weight. It was the heart attack earlier this year that actually resulted in my changes, which in turn benefited me with respect to coming off the diabetes medication.
