I was diagnosed as having "borderline diabetes" with a fasting 151. Found out from 3 diabetes centers there is no such thing as borderline diabetes. It is like being pregnant, you are or your are not.

When you are diagnosed in adulthood it is almost always type 2 which means your pancreas is still producing some insulin but perhaps you are insulin resistant.
Best to try and lose the weight as soon as possible. The weight gain probably shoved you a little closer to diabetes. Eating little starch foods, moderate portions of protein and no-starch veggies will help you lose weight and reduce the blood sugar. Be sure and exercise after each meal. I wait 30 mins after a meal and walk 1 mile. A treadmill is great for this. Usually I can drop BS 20 points by walking 1 mile.
Get a glucometer and test before meals and 2 hrs. after meals to find out which foods are raising BS too high and which foods are safe foods for you. The doctor should send you to a registered diabetes educator. Search the internet and learn as much as possible about diabetes. The more you know the easier it is to control via diet/exercise only. I have been controlling via diet/exercise 2 1/2 years now keeping it in a non-diabetic range.
