stroke with high blood sugar? - Diabetes Message Board

My dad just had a stroke. HIs sugar level wax 425. Is it possible the high reading caused the stroke? He has been on pills to control the sugar. He also has had sever back trouble the last few days. He just had MRI's done and waiting for results. Its difficult for me being so far away, he is in Boston, I am in Fl. I am on disabilty from back surgery, alone and worried. My mom is deceased, cancer, had insuline diabetes, so did my grandmother, doesn't look good for me... Any input would be appreciated!! cj

I've not heard of high blood sugar directly causing a stroke and, even if it did, it would not be just one incidence, but many months/years of poorly controlled blood sugar.

High blood sugar causes damage to the entire vascular system. It's possible that if your Dad's blood sugar has not been well controlled, he has arterial damage. If he has narrowed arteries, and then had a blood clot, a stroke would be much more likely because the clot wouldn't be able to pass through the narrowed artery and could cause either a heart attack or a stroke.

I'm sure you must be worried sick about him. If there's any way for you to get to Boston to see him, that would be good. I'm from the Boston area, and we have some really wonderful hospitals around here. If he's in ANY hospital right in Boston, then he's most likely getting excellent care.
