GADs test? - Diabetes Message Board

Has anyone heard of a GADS test? Also how about a "Shoney's test" ? My sister has just recently been diagnosed with Addison's Disease and Schmidt's Syndrome (Autoimmune Polygladular Syndrome). Her endo, suspecting Diabetes also (I already have the Schmidt's, Addison's, and Diabetes) did what he called a GADS test. Any thoughts? Now, his next step, is to do what he is calling a "Shoney's test". He said she (my sister) is to come to his office in the am (fasting, I think). He'll do a finger stick... and then she is to go down the street to the Bob Evans restraunt and have a big breakfast (maybe just normal size). Then she is to go back to his office for a couple more finger sticks. I'm just not sure about this process. Wouldn't a Fasting Glucose Tolerance test be a better test at this point.

I'm sorry, I got a little of course concerning the GADS test. She got the result, but I can't remember what it was. However, supposedly it told the doc that she will become a diabetic, without knowing when this will happen.

I love my brother! Anyway, I was given a GAD test (stands for glutamic acid decarboxylase test). I don't really understand HOW it works but my endo said that it is a predictor of Type 1 diabetes. He said that a negative result is anything under 1.0. My result was 47.6. He told me that I have a 70-80% chance of becoming diabetic in the next 5 to 10 years. Unfortunately, he also said that there is nothing I can do to avoid it except to try not to catch a cold. I have 4 children ages 2 to 7 so they are always bringing illnesses home. Oh well.

The Shoney's test that my endo wants me to do is in place of the glucose tolerance test. He does not want me to go to his office at all. He just wants me to get up in the am and go out to a restaurant. He told me that I am to eat a "large" meal. Then, two hours later, I am to go to the lab for a blood draw. There is only one blood draw with his "Shoney's test." I think he just wants to see how my pancreas is working after a big meal. I've been doing unofficial tests here and my blood sugar has been anywhere from 110 to 151 two hours after big meals. He said that just because my readings are okay now does not mean that it will continue. He said that any illness (such as a cold) will just cause my pancreas to quit. Then, I'll be diabetic. It's a scarey thought that I know that it is coming but there is nothing I can do.
