I'm a 52 year old male...was diagnosed with Type II about 5 years ago. I was pretty much in denial of my condition until a year ago, when my nephew (a pharmacuetial rep) really starting getting on me about addressing my blood sugar levels. I got a new Doc (a general practioneer) and he put me on Amaryl (4mg)and Avandia (8mg).
The drugs probably did all they could, but my diet continued as alway...anything fried and lots of it...(I'm 5'11" and 185lb., have always been able to eat whatever and never gain a pound) Recently I visited a dietician (at the insistence of my new Doc) The diet lady put me on 2,000 carbs a day.(She asked about my typical diet...I said, FRIED...chicken, pork chops, potatoes, eggs, okra..if it will fry, I'll eat it) The diet lasted about 30 days and then I did a major backslide to old habits.
Recently I began noticing that my BSL was going up (200+ fasting) so I went back to the old 2,000 carbs, again. Unfortunately, my blood sugar levels did not respond. Several days ago I had a panel of blood work done and my fasting bsl was 260. I cut back on any questionable carbs or sugars and still the high numbers.
This afternoon, I checked and my blood sugar was at 330. I was starting to get really concerned....so, I went for a walk. After a 5 minute, 2 block walk I returned home and checked my bsl....147!
I realize that's still too high, but believe me, I'm convinced. Amazing isn't it....what your body can do for you, if you allow it to....
Sorry for being so long-winded...I've been reading this board for a few days, and couldn't help but share my experience. Heck, I may even go for another walk, later today and I'm going to start the early morning, late afternoon gig tomorrow. (I'm still gonna miss those pork chops, fried potatoes,and blackeyed peas...but who knows..maybe my exercise and meds will let me "cheat" every now and then....ah, would someone please pass the chocolate cake and ice cream

)
