Anyone diabetic after pancreas surgery? - Diabetes Message Board

Hi. I'm new and trying to find my way around so bear with me! Just wondered if anyone was perfectly normal as far as blood sugar until having surgery on the pancreas for something completely unrelated? I had an ultrasound and CT scan done two years ago and they detected a tumor in my pancreas. I had the scan done for something completely different and this showed up. It gets stranger- they have to take 40% of pancreas out and the tumor turned out to be ovarian tissue. They still can't explain that one, but my blood sugars were ok in the hospital. They checked often in case I had to have insulin. I didn't. Came home and they soared in the 300's & 400's. Went on oral diabetic med's which helped and of course as the pancreas healed the sugars got better. Now, I still have to take oral med's and sugars are pretty controlled until I get very sick. Then they soar again. Urine test showed glucose in urine last week. Never has happened before and I have been very sick with pnemonia and the sugars have went up again. Just wanted to share my story and see if anyone else has a similiar one.

I have a friend who has high blood sugars even though he is not a diabetic. He suffers from pancreatitis. Which simply means an inflamation of the pancreas. His high blood sugars are caused by potassium depletion. It might be something that you want to look into. I have heard of people suffering from pancreatitis brought on by another illness. Good luck with finding a solution

When the Dr.'s first found the tumor in my pancreas they thought I had pancreatitis, then after all of the test and everything, it was just that tumor in there and actually I never had any pain or anything associated with it. They kept asking me if I was in severe pain and I kept telling them no. They did tell me that after having some of the pancreas taken out, I would be diabetic eventually anyway.
