HBA1C 6.6mmol ----118.8 in USA

My DR is quite happy with this blood test. He says if it is below 7 mmol---or 126 USA reading it is nothing to worry about. However my normal day to day readings are never this low. some times they are 12mmol or over 200 USA reading. Even 15 or 270........Is this the thinking of most DR"S. If the HBA1C is normal or near normal all is OK????

I am a bit worried, but what do I do if the DR thinks it is OK???

My HBA1C has never been above 7 or 126. So how come my everyday readings are always higher than that???

Any reply appreciated........

Hi twokatss,

An HBA1c shows the average amount of sugar that has been in a person's blood over the last 3 months.

Perhaps during the 3 months your daily readings have been more within range then the days they are above?
Also, have you checked your meter to see it is working OK - you can do that buy running the controlled solution?

Are you on diabetic meds as it may be a dosage adjustment? How long have you had 'normal' day-to-day readings of 200-270?

* My last HBA1c was 5.0. My reading after a meal run about 130, before a meal about 95-110.

Good Luck! PollyAnn

Re: HBA1C 6.6mmol ----118.8 in USA

Although the A1C supposedly tests your control over the last 3 months, what has happened over the last 30 days impacts it even more. Some Doctors care only about the A1C and will never scold you if your daily meter readings are high as long as your A1C looks good. Due to the flaws in the A1C(although it is an awesome tool) I personally think your readings ARE important. You should shoot for fasting readings and pre-meal readings under 120 mgdl and 140 mgdl two hours after beginning your meals, according to my Doctor's logic. A famous U.S. Doctor/Author, Dr. Bernstein suggests keeping it within 85-105 mgdl at all times, regardless of when you had your last meal. Your A1C results are good news, but I'd try to lower your daily numbers so you can decrease the liklihood of complications down the road. The tighter your control, the better off you'll be long-term. I'm learning that the hard way. I wish I'd follow my own advice.

Re: HBA1C 6.6mmol ----118.8 in USA

An A1c test rest result is in % and not in mmol. A result of 6.6 is probably somewhere in the 140 range. That means you have had an average glucose level of 140 for at least the last 6 weeks. That means a good part of the time you have been higher. Studies have shown that an a1c of less than 7% indicates that you will have a lower chance of getting complications. That said, you still do have some room for improvement.

Good luck and congrats on taking good care of yourself to get a reasonable a1c.
