Anyone On Glucophage Self Treating? How Do You Get Your Meds? - Diabetes Message Board

I am almost 99.9% sure that i am insulin resistant & have pre-diabetes, however i have hasimoto's & have just fired my 2nd endo who, when i brought this up to her, ignore me even though my fasting glucoses in the morning have been running between 96-120. I am not diabetic. I am also, for now, done with endocrinologists (unless, of course, i DO become a diabetic, then i'm forced to go)

You need to find a new doctor. Metformin is prescription- ie, you can't self treat.

Because you are not a doctor.

Feel free to apply to medical school and go through at least 7 years of schooling (or 11 if you include college). Then you can self-prescribe any non scheduled medication and nobody will complain.

Are you crazy? Geesh.

First off, you have no clue if you really do have IR or if your glucose level is even high. You have no clue what your A1c is.

Secondly, if you have diabetes, then you need to be followed by a doctor so they can monitor specific doses and monitor for complications.

Thirdly, you have no idea if metformin is even the appropriate medication. You have no idea if it will react with other mediciations or is contraindicated for you. You also need to have your liver function checked to make sure you don't already have liver disease the metformin can make worse.
