my husband is a diabetic ( insulin dependent) and has it under control. he has been told he cannot get the job on an oil rig because of this reason, there are medics on the rig if anything should happen. my husband is dissapointed as he really wanted this job. is honesty always the best policy....i wonder
Times like this do make us wonder about this age-old question. If he had
concealed his diabetes, and an even unrelated injury happened to him, there might be cause (at least in the US) for the insuror to refuse coverage because of fraud on his application. I have no knowledge whether such things happen in Australia or not.
You may want to contact the legal department of the American Diabetes Association. They often go to bat for people who are being discriminated against because of diabetes.
I'm not familiar with how oil rigs operate or if there are any LEGITIMATE concerns re an insulin dependent diabetic, but often the concerns are more from ignorance than from legitimacy. Anyway, contact the ADA and see what they have to say.
