Re: Very Worried Levels Way Too High

First you need to see your Dr. soon...When you test and your sugars are high do you take another shot right then? You should. Do you have any fast acting insulin? Thats what you need for times like that! The vial you are using could be bad so open another and use that. I've been diabetic for 32yrs. pretty much have had it all happen to me! I have never been on your kind of insulin though. I have a pump with novolog. I just started taking Symlin something you may consider. Let me know how you are. Jen

Re: Very Worried Levels Way Too High

Also are you going through some extra stress right now? Your period? So many things can make your sugar go high like that. Maybe just changing insulin and checking your blood sugars ALL the time. When you wake up in the morning, before you eat, 2 hours after, before bed. I have to check mine all the time. Good luck!! Really call your Dr. right away!! Jen

Angry 70/30 is NOT gonna work!

Cathy, 70/30 is NOT good for controlling bG after meals. The "70" is NPH, which lasts for over 12 hours in most people. And the "30" is regular, which typically lasts for over 6 hours.

When you eat a meal, your bG goes up much faster (2 hours to the "peak" reading is typical). So even the very fastest insulins, Humalog and Novolog and Apidra, are still a little bit too slow.... But they're WAY better than the crud you're using now.

Some experts have created a name for NPH, calling it "Not Particularly Helpful". You're doing 3 shots and having terrible results. You could probably switch to four shots per day and do HUGELY better:

One shot of Lantus per day (maybe right before bed). This will probably need to be bigger, since it replaces a bunch of the long-acting "70%" NPH in your current 70/30 shots.

And the other 3 shots, right before each meal, a shot of fast-acting... dedicated and measured to match the carbohydrate in that ONE upcoming meal, not to work (weakly) for hours and hours LONG AFTER the meal is completely digested. That's what your 70/30 does, and that's why you fly up after eating.

It seems that Jen also noticed the weirdness with "your kind of insulin", but didn't feel comfortable with saying that it's almost certainly causing your problems. Frankly, I think your Dr. sounds like a dangerous idiot. Switch to a better one STAT! ("Stat" means RIGHT NOW)

I don't know of ANY Endo who would use 70/30 for ANYTHING anymore, it sounds like you're being "treated" by an over-the-hill GP who hasn't learned anything new in a long time, and just doesn't give a dang.

Re: 70/30 is NOT gonna work!

IT IS A FAIRLY NEW DR. but I just don't think they know what they are doing either. yes I have been under ALOT of stress but hopefully that is over now. I quit my job. that is what was causing the stress. I cared for an elderly lady with alzheimer's. Trust me very very stressful. but she is not the reason that I quit. when I was on the lantus and plain novolog then my levels went down. It is just all to confusing to me. although my dad has had it for 30 years now and his dad had it too. all of his brothers and sisters have it and both my brothers do too, but not my sister. funny how genes can play such a big part in all of this. I still feel funny though. my eyes do and my head, I can go to sleep in a drop of a hat pin. I'll call in the morning and see if I can get in to see him. thanks everyone
