Is jello good for Diabetics?

I have a family member who is diabetic and loves regular jello with pineapple in it. Is that too much sugar for a person with diabetes?

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

I can't really say. It depends so much on that person. If this jello is eaten in moderation, as part of the regular diet, then there is probably nothing wrong with it. The person eating it will need to check their glucose level 2 hours after eating to see if it is ok.

If the person is on insulin, then they need to make sure that they take enough to compensate both for the jello and the fruit.

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

As a diabetic, I could never eat jello that wasn't sugarfree without having my blood sugar go through the roof. Of course, I cannot know how it affects your relative, but I do know that eating things with sugar in them makes me want to eat more and more and more. For this reason, I avoid all sugary stuff.

I have an old box of jello which says that a 1/2 cup serving has 19g of carbohydrates and 18g of that are sugars. There's no food value except the calories from the sugar, so I would count it as a poor nutritional choice.

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

As a diabetic, I would absolutely never eat regular jello (unless using it to treat a low!). It is straight sugar, and will raise blood sugar precipitously and quickly.
Add the pineapple, and you've got a lot of high-glycemic carbs.

I use sugar-free jello all the time, and have no problem making various treats with it. Sometimes you need to adjust the amount of water or what you put in it, but you can find recipes for sugar-free jello that have already done that. In fact, there are usually recipes on the boxes.

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

The other thing I enjoy doing with jello is adding club soda instead of water. It gives the Jello a nice "zing".

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

but isn't the sugar free jello made with aspartame? I know that's not a good thing.

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

When there's SF jello available, why would you eat the regular stuff?

Because aspartame is in S.F jello and that's worse on you.

Uh...no.

I don't buy into that belief. At all. Sorry.

It has been medically proven that apartame has caused many medical problems. Look it up or ask a doctor or Pharmacist, you'll be surprised!

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

There are many, many suggestions that aspartame causes all sorts of problems, but none of them have ever been proven. I've heard this time after time over the years, but I have yet to read about a scientific study that showed aspartame to be dangerous.

Health care professionals generally feel aspartame is better for people with diabetes than sugar.

Re: Is jello good for Diabetics?

Right, and why would you want to risk definite problems by eating too much sugar and having higher levels of blood glucose, versus the "maybe possible, not proved" potential problems from aspartame?

Everything in life comes down to a risk/benefit ratio. I strongly believe the risk of high blood glucose and the benefits of maintaining tight blood glucose control and avoiding heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, limb amputations, etc., etc., far outweight the possible risks of aspartame.

That's why they are saying splenda is the better choice.
