Stopping Metformin for a MRI/CT scan?

My doctor ordered an MRI/CT scan. Do I just stop the Metformin that day? Will the medicine interfere with the tests?

I'm not sure why you would want to stop your med. Did the doctor tell you to? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me why higher blood sugar would in any way help the test. What is the test for?

Is the study being done with contrast? I believe it's the contrast that's the problem. If given with Metformin is can kill the kidneys.

Call the doctor or the center and ask them.

Re: Stopping Metformin for a MRI/CT scan?

Christina,

I have a CT scan with dye contrast coming up and was told that I could not take metformin the day before and up to 2 days after. If you have any questions I would definitely ask your doctor.

Yes. The tests are with contrast. I called the imaging center and they said not take the Metformin for 48 hours after drinking the barium.

I am concerned how the barium will affect my blood sugar though...??

Re: Stopping Metformin for a MRI/CT scan?

I also had CT scan & was told not to take Metformin for 2 days. The reason is that iodine is used in contrast and it filters thru kidneys. If you have healthy kidneys to begin with, there is no problem, the 2 days are used to give time to kidneys to process the contrast. Was told to have labs done after 2 days and if all is normal, to start Metformin again. Stopping the Metformin for 2 days didn't change my blood sugar that much.
