New to board & have a question?

Hello Everyone,
Boy am I glad that I have found this board! I am not new to learning about diabetes because both my grandfathers & my grandmother has it but never has it hit so close to home with me until tonight.
I am only 28 years old and never really had any problems with my blood sugar until recently. I have started to feel light headed, a lot of headaches and the feeling of being really tired. I haven't really given it much thought until after eating dinner tonight (which by the way was a huge plate of spaghetti). I felt like I was really light-headed and almost about to pass it. Luckly, i have several glucose monitors at the house that I recently got for free after my coupons. So long story short, I tested my blood sugar and it came back at 46. I know that is low, but what should I be doing about it? I ate some pieces of candy, but I am scared to death that tonight or when I get up in the morning it will do that again.
Can anyone offer advice on this and how often should I be checking my levels

Thanks,
Veronica

Re: New to board & have a question?

Veronica,

It sounds like you may have reactive hypOglycemia, which is low blood sugar. In this condition, your body actually produces too much insulin in response to food, thus causing your blood sugar to go too low. The condition is usually treated simply with diet...a lower carb, higher protein diet. You can find hypoglycemic diets on the web, or you can go to a doctor, take a glucose tolerance test and have it confirmed, and then ask for a referral to a registered dietician, who can help you with diet and meal planning.

One of the key things to avoid the lows of hypoglycemia is to make sure you never, ever eat carbohydrates without also eating some protein. Treating your low of 46 with some candy was okay as far as it went in that it will bring your blood sugar back up, but you should also eat some protein and maybe some fat (a piece of cheese, some peanut butter, a piece of meat, etc.). This way, after your body produces its excess of insulin in response to the carb, it'll still have the protein/fat to work on for a while, which will prevent the rebound low. If you include protein/fat in every meal and snack you eat, you most likely can completely avoid the lows.

Incidentally, hypoglycemia is often a precursor to type 2 diabetes, so you will need to stay on top of this over time to make sure that isn't happening.

Ruth

YOu may also want to only treat lows with one exchange (15g) of carbs to avoid a blood sugar spike.

Ive been a diabetic since age 9 and im 39 now, with no complications. If you had all the carbs for your dinner, and right after you had a blood sugar of 46? That is really odd. I dont know how this happened, unless it was rapidly dropping as you were eating anyway. Pizza, has more carbs than spaghetti, and I would imagine it depends on how much you actually had. I guess I could eat spaghetti, and my blood sugar could do that, if it was fighting with me anyway, and dropping the entire time. i would go to the Dr. If you feel that way again, orange juice WITH sugar added in is a quick fix for that, ive used this when mine was going down fast.

Re: New to board & have a question?

It sounds as though you need to keep a check on your blood sugar to find out how different foods are affecting it. 46 is way too low. You can drink a glass of fresh made almond milk, you could have carrots or beets, or even a tomato with avocado. The wrong thing to have is something very high in sugar unless you want this to keep repeating its self. Education is essential. I hope this helps.
