Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Hello everyone, I have posted before, about using urine testing strips and getting strong reactions. Well, a friend gave me a new monitor to test my sugar levels, and I found that over the past week or so they have been running mostly from around 131 to 153, with the odd 117 thrown in. Morning readings have been constantly higher than those last thing at night, but I gather that is quite common. Bear in mind that I have been following an extremely low carb diet over this time, and the weight has dropped off me. I dread to think what the numbers would have been had I been eating my usual rubbish diet. My downfall has always been carbs, and it looks as if I am now paying the price.

I finally saw the doc on Wednesday, taking my readings with me, and he said it did look likely, but he couldn't accept my readings as a basis for treatment. He wanted urgent blood testing, which I've had done this morning, so I should hear soon, and I fully expect the diagnosis of diabetes. I'm braced for it.

My point here is that my doctor said most of my symptoms are not down to diabetes, they are more like depression and anxiety, and I wonder if anyone has experienced a combination of anxiety and diabetes where the symptoms seem to go hand in hand. How do you know what's causing what? I'm frightened that even if my diabetes is treated, I'm still not going to feel well and have to end up on meds for anxiety as well as those for diabetes and high blood pressure I don't want to rattle when I walk.

I am the first to admit that I am an anxious natured person, but I've felt anxious many, many times before and not felt as poorly as I do now. Sorry to be boring, but my symptoms are...

1 ) Feeling unreal and detached from everything, spaced out
2 ) Extremely tired
3 ) Eyes feel gritty and dry
4 ) Very strong palpitations, often waking me during the night, and missed
beats. Palpitations worse on exertion, but also worse during things like
seeing the doctor, or during my blood tests etc.
5 ) Some cramps in my calves
6 ) Joint pains, especially my neck, shoulders and arms, causing headaches
7 ) No interest in doing things I used to enjoy
8 ) Often feeling that my legs are like jelly and won't hold me up
9 ) On and off dry mouth and throat
10) Feeling as if I just want to crawl into bed and stay there
11) Tingling in my arms and legs

My doctor said that at the levels my monitor was showing, I wouldn't get such symptoms. I am not convinced. I feel worse after meals, I can almost tell that my levels are rising and I dread it. Is it true that you only get symptoms when levels are extremely high? Can anyone relate to my symptoms as being due to diabetes, or should I look more to anxiety problems? I'm trying to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, but sometimes my legs are so weak I can hardly walk.

By the way, I am taking Cardura 4mg, Amlodipine 5mg, and Bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg for high blood pressure. I often wonder about the effects of these drugs too

Sorry to go on but I would be grateful for any opinions or advice.

Thank you
Maureen

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Hi Maureen, You described all the symptoms my sister had when her blood sugars were out of whack. I hope your doctor did an A1C on you to find out what your averages have been. Your sugars might be running even higher at times than when you are testing. I have also heard of depression being linked to diabetes. Let us know how your tests went. Good luck.

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Maureen,

You may wanna have your thyroid function tested. Symptoms of thyroid dysfunction can be very similar to those of diabetes and are often mistaken for anxiety/depression issues and nothing says you can't have diabetes and thyroid problems at the same time. If your TSH level is not running somewhere around 1-2, even though the normal lab ranges are a lot wider, then you may wanna pop over to the thyroid board before going on any medications for depression.

Hey, good luck. Hope you get it worked out soon.

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Thank you to both of you for responding. I believe my doctor is testing my A1C, and also my thyroid. My thyroid was tested back in February when I saw a different doctor because I was feeling so shattered all the while, but nothing showed up. Looking back, I can't believe that she didn't think of sugar levels. However, this new doctor seems a bit more thorough, so hopefully this week I will hear something. I'm still following a very low carb diet, and although still spaced out and jittery, I am feeling a tiny bit better, with less palpitations during the night, so who knows, maybe it will help. Anyone know how long it takes for dietary measures to take more of an effect? I obviously want to avoid meds like the plague if possible, as I have had some bad reactions in the past to bp meds I will keep you posted as to what happens.

Thanks again
Maureen

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Hi....I'd like some input here. Isn't it possible that the medications you are taking can cause many of the problems you're encountering. I was on blood pressure medication which absolutely caused severe anxiety and pains. If I were you I'd check out the side effects of your particular medications first, before I'd think the diabetes, or possible diabetes, could be causing them. When you read about side effects of drugs, they list many, but even then, there are side effects that are not listed. I know that for a fact - because I personally had a similar problem. Just food for thought.......(and not carbs)....LOL

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Hi Looly, thanks for your reply. Yes, I have many times wondered about my bp meds causing symptoms, especially as I've had some bad reactions in the past. Not to do with anxiety as such, just making me feel extremely ill in general...like heart pounding, flushing, feeling on the verge of collapse literally. Lisinopril affected me like this when they upped the dose, and I reacted similarly to Benicar. Amlodipine at the 10mg dose turned my legs into tree trunks. I can just about tolerate 5mg. However, doctors tell me it's all in my mind, it can't possibly be the tablets. I was even told Amlodipine wasn't making my legs swell, it was my blood pressure. Strangely though, when they reluctantly took me off it my legs went to normal. I'm sure their eyes roll upwards when they see me coming. I've got to the point where I don't say anything because I fear their reactions.

When I saw my doctor about this possible diabetes, I mentioned that my weight had escalated since starting Cardura a few months ago, but he never offered to try something else. So I'm wary of mentioning it again. But yes, I am wondering about my meds. Would you mind me asking what you were on and how it affected you? Or is this for another board? Is it too off topic?

Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

The medication I took was Atenolol, a beta blocker. The doctor gave it to me despite the fact that is is not a recommend medication if you are diabetic. That was the first error. Compouding that, it caused severe anxiety in me to the point it became unbearable. The dr. said it wasn't possible, but go explain why when I went off the medication I went back to being myself. I have diabetes too. I am not as yet on medication but because of my lack of tolerance to most drugs I am terrified to start one. I am trying to help my blood sugar go down with diet and exercise, but I am not following through very well. With the hope that I can back on track, I am will try to stay away from meds as the side effects I have read about for most diabetic meds are not ones that I care to endure. I would probably get all the side effects plus ones the doctors never heard of, nor would they acknowledge. It's a predicament and one that I would not have chosen if give the choice. I would not be afraid of talking to your physician about your concerns. Why should you suffer?

Question Re: Symptoms Due To Diabetes Or Anxiety?

Since my first posting, I have been given the diagnosis of diabetes. I got my results over the phone, and have been asked to make an appointment to see the diabetes specialist at the practice. The doc who gave me my results thinks I need oral meds and dietary measures at the moment. My fasting level was 162, which was slightly higher than I had been measuring it at home (around 157) but I was extremely nervous going for the blood tests, so maybe that made it go up a little. I will be seeing this specialist next week hopefully.

However, I have taken a fasting reading this morning, just over a week since my blood test, and it was 104! I have no strips left to retest it, so will be getting some, but if it's not a rogue reading, what's going on? I have been following a very strict low carb diet for about three weeks......do you think this might be having some effect, and would it do so that quickly? From 157 to 104 in a week? Also, I don't feel particularly well, I have to say. Shakey, headachey, and sick to my stomach, wanting to lie down all the while. Can this happen when your sugar levels come down, and will it go? I expected to feel better with a drop in sugar levels

I'd appreciate any opinions or advice once more.

Many thanks
Maureen
