does a blood sugar reading of 170 mean you have diabetes?

I had coffee and watermelon this morning... I work with my mother who has diabetes and she checked my sugar and it was 170.

Does that definitely mean I have diabetes?

It depends on several factors. Watermelon is very high in sugar and what you really need to know is how quickly you recovered from it. How long after you STARTED eating the watermelon did she check you? What was in your coffee? You need to check first thing in the morning, AND two hours after the START of the meal/snack, without eating anything in between and see what your numbers are. Anybody can be at 170, the timing is the crucial factor in deciding if you are impaired.

Non-diabetics can reach as high as 180 after a high carb meal, although most people only hit 140. What makes the difference is whether you get symptoms with your numbers. For example, when I hit about 180-200, my high blood sugar symptoms kick in: VERY frequent urination, extreme unquenchable thirst, irritability. Keep an eye on things anyhow since you are predisposed to diabetes from your mother anyhow.

You could check your fasting blood sugar. I would try testing your blood sugar before you eat and one and two hours after you eat. If your two hour is 140 or above I would check the three hour to see if it is coming down. Before bed is another good time.
