How has your A1C been in the past? Has it always been so well controlled? How long have you been a diabetic? My neuro told me once (I saw him for something unrelated to diabetes problems)that nerve damage can occur even when you are pre-diabetic. Which is very scary.

It is typical for people with diabetes to use insulin in the hospital. This is nothing to worry about at all. Insulin is the natural substance used by the body to control blood sugar and is the most effective treatment method for diabetes. The doctors prefer this regimen because it gives them a quick, immediate "handle" on your sugar.

It is also typical for people with diabetes to have high sugars when the body is otherwise ill - especially with infections.

Invasive surgery where tissues need to heal demand a low sugar level. High sugars cause delays in the healing process. It is possible
to tell a person is diabetic by looking at their healed surgical scars. They are wider and have much more scar tissue than scars of nondiabetics.

This does not mean that you will leave the hospital on insulin. Especially if you are maintaining 5.9 - this is EXCELLENT CONTROL of your diabetes. Congratulations on a job well done.
