insulin and gestational diabetes...help asap

i have gestational diabetes and was put on insulin today. they gave me a novalog pen. im supposed to take 12 units before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. after 2 hrs my blood sugar is supposed to be under 120, they are very strict with GD. i took the 12 before dinner tonight and my sugar was still high. it was 143 2 hrs after dinner. i know that doesnt sound very high but for GD even 5-10 points over is too much. im not really sure what im supposed to do. how long does this stuff stay in your body? im a little worried im gonna wake up in the middle of the night with extremely low sugar and pass out. i took my dose at 5:15 and will probably go to bed around 10. will it be gone by then or will it make me drop all of a sudden? is it possible that they will never be able to get my sugar under control? its really dangerous to the baby to constantly be loaded up with glucose and im doing everything im supposed too i just cant seem to get it to go right

It's probable that you might need slightly more insulin than they have prescribed. What you should do is to put a call into the endo. THey are the only person who can tell you how to handle the situation. Synthetic insulin like novolog stays in your system for between 3-4 hours after injecting, so it will be out of your system by ten most likely. Put in a call right now to the endo's answering service and have the doc call you tonight to discuss your concerns.

I know how scary it is. I had GD too and was put on insulin. Am now Type 2. What kind of foods were you eating also before the 143? Have you seen a dietician who can help guide you how many carbs you should be eating in conjuntion with the insulin? If not, you need to ASAP. My sugars were sometimes as high as 168ish 2hrs after eating when I was pregnant and were rarely below 110, which wasn't often. If I remember right, I was usually around 125-138 2hrs after and my son was just fine. He was only 6 pounds 7oz. at birth with no birth defects whatsoever! Are you keeping a log of what your sugars are and what you ate? That may help too. You could post them and we could help you out and maybe see what you could do to lower them.

Re: insulin and gestational diabetes...help asap

ive seen a dietician and im on a strict meal plan. my fasting number in the morning is always good it usually runs between 65-90 which is right where they want it to be. i called the endo this morning and they said i will have to give the insulin a couple days to build up in my body before it starts doing its job and that if it still doesnt they can always increase my dose. i go back on the 13th so i guess they will see what they have to do then. i go to the dietician again on monday to see if they need to change my food a little now that ive been on this program for a week and now that im on insulin.

my meal plan is like this

check fasting sugar (60-90) and ketones
12 units insulin
9:00 breakfast 45-60 carbs 3oz protein
check sugar 2hrs <120
11:00 snack 15 carbs no protein
12 units insulin
1:00 lunch 60-75 carbs 4oz protein
check sugar 2 hrs <120
3:00 snack 15 carbs 1oz protein
12 units insulin
5:00 dinner 60-75 carbs 5oz protein
check sugar 2 hrs <120
7:00 snack 15-30 carbs 1oz protein

i was underweight from being sick with mono when i got pregnant so they have me eating a little bit more then some of there other GD patients to make sure the baby gets everything he needs and to make sure i dont start losing weight cuz i have a good metabolism.
