New to this board....

I was just wondering if type 2 or 1 diabetes were anything like
gestational Diabetes? I am pregnant 35 weeks and was just diagnosed with gd and dont know what its like? Have any of you experience diabetes with pregnancy? How do you/how often are you testing yourselves in a day?

Re: New to this board....

Hi there. I had gestational diabetes last year when I was pregnant. I got diagnosed a bit earlier than you (I think it was around 26 or 27 weeks). It was exceedingly frustrating b/c from the very start of my pregnancy (and in general really) I was watching what I ate and making a point to get some physical activity in. So when the diagnosis came I was not a happy camper though you come to realize that you can't always control getting something like diabetes.

My advice is to make sure you're seeing an endocrinologist and a dietician regularly. I tested my sugars 2 hours after every meal. Please note that the "normal" range for GD is different than for Type II. So I was supposed to be under 125 2 hours after a meal. If you work closely with your endocrinolgist and dietician you can have a healthy pregnancy and deliver a normal sized baby.

I also advise you get screened for Type II after you deliver. My OB's repeatedly reassured me that I would not have developed Type II - that the GD would disappear once the baby was born. Lo and behold 3 months after I had the baby I was diagnosed with Type II.

Re: New to this board....

Thanks for the advice i met for the first time with my gd specialist she put me on a diet and i got supplies to test my sugars. I think i can stick to this diet plan i dont have too much longer to go with this pregnancy so a few weeks wont kill me. I also plan to stick to the diet after i deliver i think once i get used to it i will be ok and can stick to it. I can look at it as a way for me and baby to feed. Smaller meals every two hours for the both of us...lol

Re: New to this board....

Based on what I have learned while researching diabetes - - your child will be at greater risk for developing type 1 because you have gestational diabetes. Take control now. If only I new then what I know now. My 8 yr. old was diagnosed with type 1 over a year ago and I had gestational diabetes. She is now an "alkavorian" and does not have to take insulin. The book a friend introduced me to is called, "The pH Miracle for Diabetes".

Re: New to this board....

I too had gestational diabetes with my last two children who were born less than a year a part, and I believe that is why my gestational diabetes turned into type II diabetes as my body was too taxed.

With gestational diabetes I think I had to test like 6 times a day, but I was also on insulin for my pregnancies (not now of course) and now my doctor only wants me to test twice a day.

I have heard most gestational diabetes goes away, so I don't want to scare you into worrying yours won't go away. Stay positive and I am sure you will be ok.
