196, at anytime, is in the diabetic range.

It is at a level that can possibly cause damage to vessels and nerves.

Without trying to alarm you, you need to see your Dr. There are ways of treating this.

You need to see your doctor as that is high for blood sugar. I once read that a test of less than 200 would not get you a diabetic diagnosis, but my doctor told me, they do diagnose before the magic number of 200.

Who tested you? Did you wash your hands before testing? It's quite possible to have a test come out high if you have any kind of substance on your finger that could be read by the meter as sugar.

You don't give much information as to the circumstances, but if you have been testing regularly and getting desirable results and this is a reading that is unusual due to eating more carbs than you should, then go for a walk, drink quite a bit of water to bring it down faster. I've had just a few readings near that range and I jog in place for a while and it is back to normal in 30 min.

If this is a spot check with someone else's meter, get to a doctor soon.
