Newbie on insulin: I didn't have it w/ me so I ate dinner w/o taking it?

I've been type 2 for about 10 years, but was on oral meds all that time, until about two months ago they started me on insulin (novolin 70/30). I am pretty good about taking it when I'm supposed to (30 min. before my bfast and dinner) but occasionally I don't have it with me like tonight. I was at my dad's and was famished and so I ate a couple of hot dogs w/ only one roll (22 g carbs). I took my oral metformin when I got home. I forgot to mention I also take metformin w/ insulin 2xday. Is it ok that I skipped the insulin or should I take it after I eat. I'm confused. Any help is appreciated.

Go ahead and take it UNLESS you have a problem with getting hypoglycemic at night, or if it's really close to your bedtime. I would skip it, or take a blood sugar reading. Anything less than 150 (8.3 mmol)
I would skip....this is a good thing to bring up with your doctor next time you visit.

Your doctor is smart, and has placed your injection so that the release of the insulin coincides with the release of the food. But what will happen when you forget, is that your sugar will remain high from the meal.... so using the insulin, even though it's late, still reduces the time-level product of the sugar.
