Please Help me help my boyfriend!

I have been seeing my boyfriend Bob for about six months now and he is a Brittle Diabetic. He has had problems finding the right "good" doctors and after he got sick last night I am like at my wits end trying to find some answers. Most importantly I would love for someone to maybe help me plan out a really healthy diet and diet schedule for him while he continues his search for a good endocronologist (sp?) I am still learning about this disease myself so please bare with me lol But any info would be so incredibly helpful. He is not only my boyfriend he is really my best friend as well and I want to help him get on the right track. Thank you very much~ Jamie Lynn

Re: Please Help me help my boyfriend!

it is hard to make "plans" for someone with labile blood sugar problems. An endocrinologist is your best bet, for sure. This can have to do with hormonal problems, thyroid, adrenal insufficiency, he may need a gastroenterologist if delayed stomach emptying is a factor in his disease.

In general, for your meal plans, choose the "wise" sources of carbohydrates, those which come from whole-grains and complex-carbohydrate cereals.... these "output" more slowly and contain a good "bang-for-the-buck" in terms of providing nutrients to his body. This kind of eating slows down the sugar rises from food.

If you monitor his sugar levels, and record them graphically, you might see "trends" or "cycles" which repeat. If those become apparent, you can move the carb intake to the times of day when his sugars are low and feed him only proteins and fats when they are high.
