My son has lost 7 pounds in the last couple of weeks. Since diabetes is in our family, we checked him with my mother-in-law's meter. He came home from school where he did not eat anything all day. He did eat a few gold fish crackers when he got home. We checked him about an hour later and his reading was 156. We checked him again thirty minutes after eating a big supper and his reading was 150.
We also checked my 14 year old niece and 17 year old son at the same time and their readings were 103 and 105. They ate the same meal so this discrepancy in readings is what worries me. Should I be concerned?
Absolutely. I agree with TF...a weight loss of 7 pounds in a couple of weeks combined with those numbers is probably indicative of the beginnings of T1 diabetes. In addition to a glucose tolerance test, he should also have a C-peptide test and a GAD antibody test.
Thank you for your replies. I have him an appt. next Thursday. After looking at the symptoms, my son does drink a lot, but I have not noticed an increase in urination.
However, we do have several cases of Type 1 diabetes in our extended family so I will definitely get it checked out.
