I had to take a glucose tolerance test because I had some high readings 2 hours after eating and one high fasting reading. I fasted for 12 hours before the test and shortly after I drank the glucose drink I felt a bit woozy and very tired. Then I started to feel nauseated and this pretty much lasted for a couple hours but dissipated as time went by. Are these symptoms indicative that I am pre-diabetic or diabetic? Or are these just normal side effects from the glucose? Any input would be appreciated.
Fatigue is a symptom associated with a high blood sugar. A heavy glucose load in a diabetic causes his blood sugar level to rise higher and stay high longer than a nondiabetic's does for the same load.
The nausea, I think, just means you drank something sickeningly sweet on an empty stomach
I get sick like that when my blood sugar drops fast (usually about hour 4 on a 5 hour test). After the nausea goes away, I just feel groggy. It usually takes me a day to recover fully.
Many people get those symptoms because they have to drink that terrible stuff and nothing else and then all the blood draws. I'd just wait until the results came in.
I had problems with the Glucose Tolerance Test. I started vomiting and passed out after 30 minutes. I could never finish the test and felt terrible for a couple of days.
My doctor sent me for a 5-hour glucose tolerance test after an episode of "syncope" where I passed out and hit my head.
Now I know what it's like to be tortured. 8 needle sticks in a 5 hour period.
They tried my right arm twice but couldn't get a draw, so I had all 6 blood draws from my left arm.
Why don't they put in some kind of IV line and draw the blood from that?
Is it more fun to torture the patient with endless sticks?
