What can you eat with an upset stomach?

I had an upset stomach the other day (the first time I've had an upset stomach sinbe being diagnosed with Type II) and I didn't know what foods I could eat to calm my tummy that wouldn't spike my sugars. For example, typically foods that calm my stomach are plain toast, crackers, ginger ale, bananas, cream of wheat, etc. None of these are exactly the best foods to be eating when you have Type II.

So does anyone have ideas for what a Type II can eat to calm an upset stomach??

Re: What can you eat with an upset stomach?

Uma Anne,
For just one or two days, it won't hurt you all that much to eat whatever it is that can calm your tummy. Obviously you don't want to be eating those foods frequently, but if that's all you can keep down, then just consider it a temporary problem, and get back on track as soon as your stomach settles.

For those of us on insulin, we actually end up having to eat sugary things (such as regular jello, regular soda) in those circumstances just to keep our blood sugars up. Or, sometimes, our blood sugars go up due to the stress of the illness, and then we have to take even more insulin to keep them down.

Somedays you just can't win! But, with diabetes, it's all about winning the war...if you lose a skirmish occasionally, that's okay.

Ruth

Re: What can you eat with an upset stomach?

Many times an upset stomach is caused by unfriendly bacteria that need to be made more friendly.

Eating plain yogurt, kerfir or a probiotic -- named L Reuteri will help rebalance the intestinal bacteria that is out of balance.

Thanks guys, this is very helpful info. SamQ, the war vs. skirmish analogy really helped me understand how to approach this...
