Bagels are something to definitely avoid. They have as many carbs in them as 4 pieces of bread! When I was first diagnosed my mom gave me a bagel for breakfast and 3 hours later my sugars were in the 24.0 range! I haven't eaten a bagel since.
According to my dietician different foods can result in different spikes for different people. For example, graham crackers make my sugars go up quite a bit, however, my grandmother who is also T1 has no problems with them.
What I find with pasta is I have to shoot up quite a bit of insulin (more than just your basic 1 unit to 5 carbs ratio) when I eat it so I cut down because I like to take the lowest amount of insulin possible. My mom is t2 and she hasn't eaten a "white" carb in years. The whole grain pastas and breads are much easier on your sugars.
The best fruit I've found to eat is grapefruit. A lot of diabetics on cholesterol lowering drugs can't eat it, but if you can it's absolutely wonderful. I like the red grapefruits and I usually sprinkle a little bit of splenda on top. I find it doesn't do much to my sugars (about 14 carbs in a half a large and only 54 calories!) and it does cut my appetite and keeps my entire system flushed out.
I dread the day I ever have to go on lipitor because I'd have to give up my grapefruit
What types of sweetener (if any) have you been trying, Sally? It took me about 10 years to discover splenda, and I have to say I cannot use anything else. I don't use a lot of splenda, mainly just to sweeten up my tea or on some cheerios or grapefruit or berries when I have them. It really does get rid of the sweet cravings we all have sometimes and it does taste most like sugar (it's sticky like sugar too).
