| Re: T2 preventable?
To avoid type 2 diabetes, or minimize its effect, do the following:
If you have excess body fat, lose it. Your waist circumference at navel level should be no more than half your height. Excess body fat often leads to the insulin resistance of type 2 diabetes.
Increase exercise. Lack of exercise often leads to the insulin resistance of type 2 diabetes.
Clean up your diet: no more sugary drinks for one thing (and artificially sweetened sweet drinks are not so good either). Choose good carbs (those with fiber like vegetables, whole fruit, beans, and whole grains) and avoid bad carbs (added sugars). Choose good fats (unsaturated) and avoid bad fats (saturated, and trans-fats from hydrogenated oil). Be sure to get sufficient vitamins and minerals (for example, vitamin D deficiency may lead to higher blood sugar levels).
And stop smoking. Smoking is bad for your health in so many ways that it should be your number one priority in terms of improving your health habits.
Genetics has a lot to do with type 2 diabetes. Some people may pack on considerable excess body fat and not exercise but still not get type 2 diabetes (although they may be unhealthy in other ways). Others may need to be athletes to keep their blood sugar under control. Either way, avoiding excess body fat and doing exercise helps your health; even if you do get type 2 diabetes, minimizing excess body fat and increasing exercise will reduce the effects and the amount of drugs that may be needed to control it.
