High Spikes

As I was coming into work today I felt like I was going to pass out. Weak, shaky, slightly disoriented and felt as if I was in a dream, not really there. I thought these were symptoms of low blood sugar so I tested when I got to my desk. My results were 287.

I am a type II diabetic and take medication. My level has been running a little high all day. Lowest I've tested is 156, but feel better now, just tired.

Are those typical symptoms for high glucose? How high can I go and will I really pass out like I feel like I'm about to?

Dont' know much about the high end of blood sugars.

Re: High Spikes

When your blood sugars spike or drop I think it's the sudden action that causes those symptoms. A LOT of people don't take care of their diabetes and constantly run hyperglycemic levels and don't feel like you did all the time.

For instance (this makes me so mad, but I digress), every christmas my dad's blood sugar goes up to 35. Without fail, he will eat himself into a near coma. 35 is a reading of 630. And he doesn't pass out! This past year my mom and I told him if his sugars go that high we're calling an ambulance and they will most likely admit him into the hospital. That was enough to get him to only eat half a pumpkin pie instead of the entire pie.

My point? Your sugars can go pretty high before you pass out. 287 is high, but not deathly high, and the symptoms you had were probably because they shot up quickly. When I had mono a few years back my sugars stayed around 300 for about a week and I didn't feel anything like you were feeling because they crept up slowly.
