Re: A1c

First of all, I don't know why your doctor would choose glipizide as the first drug of choice to treat T2 diabetes. Glipizide is a sulfonylurea and, as such, it works by forcing the pancreas to produce more insulin, but does nothing for increasing the cells' sensitivity to insulin. Drugs like metformin are much more commonly used nowadays, as they increase insulin sensitivity without putting further strain on the pancreas.

Now that you've lost weight and are sticking to your diabetic diet, you may be able to get by without medications or, at the very least, you probably can reduce your medication. If you can't eliminate all the medication (and even if you can, that may only work for a while, as T2 tends to be progressive), at the very least you should ask about switching to another drug like metformin. You'd also be more likely to have fewer lows on the metformin than you are now, while still maintaining excellent control.

And, by the way...CONGRATULATIONS on achieving such excellent control! I know it wasn't just the medication...it also included a lot of hard work on your part!

Ruth

P.S. As for the cholesterol issue...diet and exercise should continue to bring that down. If it doesn't, you may want to eventually look into taking one of the statin drugs to further reduce it.

The Reason My Doctor Gave Me Glipizide Is Because Of The Metformin Does To My Stomach Even My Daughter Had Problems With Metformin And Since I Already Have Stomach Issues And Because He Said I Had 60 Yr Old Kidneys That Is Why He Went With Glipizide...I Also Think The Reason I Became A Diabetic Was Because Every Day I Was Drinking Orange Juice For Potassium As I Am Taking A Fluid Pill For Blood Pressure So When I Got Diagnosed The 1st Time My Fasting Was A 229 And My A1c Was 7.1....Thank You For The Encouragement I Have Swore Off All Soda's I Drink Lots Of Water And I Now Drink Ice Tea With No Sweetners..I Swore Off Cakes,Pies And Other Dessert Unless It Is With Splenda And Then I Still Limit Myself.....I Cant Take A Statin Drug As The Only Antibiotic I Can Take Interfers With A Statin Drug For Cholestrol....I Am Still On The Glipizide And Im Gonna See How I Do With It And In 3 Months If Its Still A Good A1c I Am Gonna See If My Doctor Suggest Lowing The Amount....Thank You Alot

Re: A1c

Tx Lady-

Congratulations on the wt loss! The wt loss and diabetic diet were at least partially responsible for the nice improvement in blood sugar.

Keep up the good work.
