First of all, I don't know why your doctor would choose glipizide as the first drug of choice to treat T2 diabetes. Glipizide is a sulfonylurea and, as such, it works by forcing the pancreas to produce more insulin, but does nothing for increasing the cells' sensitivity to insulin. Drugs like metformin are much more commonly used nowadays, as they increase insulin sensitivity without putting further strain on the pancreas.
Now that you've lost weight and are sticking to your diabetic diet, you may be able to get by without medications or, at the very least, you probably can reduce your medication. If you can't eliminate all the medication (and even if you can, that may only work for a while, as T2 tends to be progressive), at the very least you should ask about switching to another drug like metformin. You'd also be more likely to have fewer lows on the metformin than you are now, while still maintaining excellent control.
And, by the way...CONGRATULATIONS on achieving such excellent control! I know it wasn't just the medication...it also included a lot of hard work on your part!

P.S. As for the cholesterol issue...diet and exercise should continue to bring that down. If it doesn't, you may want to eventually look into taking one of the statin drugs to further reduce it.
