First signs of Neuropathy?

I'm still a little confused as to whether i have first signs of neuropathy. I had my first diabetic review on 5 Jan and my GP checked my feet, said i'd got good circulation then used a tuning fork and said everything was OK. What i have noticed since then is that (and i have noticed a pattern), that i have had my right foot completely numb and on another occasion my right hand has gone numb and on a third occasion my right arm was completely numb and this has alway been either a sat or sun morn when i wake up after i've had a lie-in which baffles me a bit. I did go and see my GP about a week ago and she doesn't think it is neuropathy. How can i know for sure? will i need to go back to my GP and ask for more tests or go to a chiropodist?

Re: First signs of Neuropathy?

That sounds much more like something structural (neck or spine). Neuropathy typically begins with a slight tingling or numbness and most often in the feet. It is usually very slight at first. Very often the problem in the feet begins with a loss of vibration sense - you lose some of the ability to balance. Sometimes you get sharp stabbing pains as well.

I have had back problems and what you describe is what sometimes happens when I sit the wrong way (my foot goes numb). Sometimes my hand goes numb as well and it is a problem with the ulnar nerve in my elbow. I would recommend seeing someone about such joint problems that may be the cause. While I am not a doctor, I agree with yours that it is most likely not neuropathy.

Re: First signs of Neuropathy?

I would agree that this sounds much more like a joint or spinal problem that is probably brought on by laying in the same position longer than normal. I would go ahead and talk to your GP about it. Sometimes if something is pressing on a nerve it will cause this, and it could be as simple as being sure to change the position you are lying in when you sleep in.
