You don't have to be. You may be able to lower it with exercise and diet. 6.3 is pre-diabetes. metformin may help you reverse the condition, but you can also do it without it as diet/exercise works better.

This is a decision that you need to make with your doctor. Some are more aggressive than others. The other poster is correct in that you can do a lot with diet and exercise. It also depends on how high your are spiking. A 6.3% with steady averages is a lot less dangerous than a 6.3 with many high spikes. You are pretty close to full blown diabetes. Apparently they are planning on using 6.5 as a cut off to diagnose diabetes. So whatever you do, you need to get going quickly.

Best of luck.

Re: a1c blood sugar at 6.3 do i need meds?

Just to give you some perspective, my A1C was 5.4 when I was diagnosed with Type II and my doc put me on metformin. He didn't use the A1C as a basis of diagnosis. He used the results of my 3 hour glucose tolerance test. Since my 2 hour value was 201, I was diagnosed with Type II. Have you had an oral glucose tolerance test to determine how high you're spiking after a glucose load?
