Is there something to give someone with type 1 diabetes if their blood sugar is too low? What is they are no able to chew candy etc to get their sugar up, isn't there some kind of spray or tablets you can give them??
I know there used to be a glucose gel that you could put between the cheek and gum to be absorbed. If the person is unable to take something, the first thing you do is to call 911.
If they're easily able to swallow, just not chew, then juice is an excellent way to treat lows. Just don't overdo it...4 oz. of juice is usually 15 grams of carbs, and the rule of treating lows is 15 g of carbs, wait 15 minutes, then test again. If the bg is still too low (under 70), then give another 15g of carbs and wait another 15 minutes and test again. Usually by that time the bg is up to normal.
You can also smear frosting on the inside of the cheek.
