does being hypoglycemic mean I am gonna get diabetes?

I've had blood test for diabetes before and it's normal range, but as long as I can remember I have bouts of low blood sugar if I don't eat when Im tired or after a workout or sometimes if I'm catching the cold and even right before my period starts and don't eat my body will start to get shaky, sweat, nervous and weak all over, but after I drink something like orange juice or eat I feel normal again.

What tests are accurate to know for sure I have hypoglycemia and not diabetes or do they go hand in hand? My blood sugar would drop fast sometimes while pumping breastmilk is that normal?

Today I got really low blood sugar and feel very weak and unwell after working out and not sleeping enough or eating while at the store. I had to sit and they gave me electrolytes. What should I do? I feel like I'm constantly on the verge of getting low blood sugar today and scared.

Re: does being hypoglycemic mean I am gonna get diabetes?

Diabetes is too high blood sugar. Low blood sugar has nothing to do with it. There is nothing to be done for low blood sugar except to remember to eat. Mine always tests out below normal - last time it was 56 and I had eaten a light breakfast. Anyway, I just have to remember to eat regularly and all is fine. My doctor tells me that low blood sugar is a sign your pancreas works really well and not poorly as in diabetes.

Re: does being hypoglycemic mean I am gonna get diabetes?

While it is true that in some cases hypoglycemia can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes (the pancreas burns out a bit) it does not necessarily have to happen. My Mom is 77 and has hypog. and I suspect that is never going to change, although it is not quite as bad as it used to be.

To get a true picture of what is happening, an oral glucose tolerance test can be done and it will show what your body does with a heavy dose of glucose over time. It is not always definitive as hypo can happen in the presence of high glucose consumption or not eating at all. So depending on which area your problem lies, the test may not be conclusive.

Re: does being hypoglycemic mean I am gonna get diabetes?

Tatsu, In my particular case, bouts of hypoglycemia did lead eventually to full blown type 1 diabetes. Now both parents had diabetes as well. Just be sure than NOW you are eating healthy and do not skip meals please. that was my problem in the years before I was dx with diabetes. I also did not drink enough water so I hope that isn't a problem with you as well. Keep a close eye out now and keep healthy habits like this hon. To add to this: Eat smaller and more frequent meals, healthy ones and you will be sure to keep your blood sugars as close to normal as possible. Your description of your lows are exactly how mine were. But there is every indication that if you go to work on these things now you have a much better chance of avoiding diabetes in the future.

Re: does being hypoglycemic mean I am gonna get diabetes?

Bonnie, just to let you know, hypoglycemia can lead to type 2 diabetes (some folks end up as insulin dependent), but it has no connection to type 1 diabetes which is autoimmune in nature (and has nothing to do with the burning out of the pancreas due to over-use).

Wow Bonnie. You must have really confused the docs! With that history and then hypog. to boot! I'm amazed they made an accurate diagnosis at all. All I hope is that you are doing well. Are you pumping? I loved my pump!
