Cough medicine for a diabetic

After having a cold last week, I have developed a dry, tickling cough.

Can anyone recommend a cough medicine for a diabetic..?

Re: Cough medicine for a diabetic

Aren't most of them sweetened with aspartame? I know most of the Robitussins are sweetened with synthetics sweeteners. I use Delsym because I am sensitive to aspartame but I'm not diabetic. Just have issues with the synthetic sweeteners so have to be on the lookout for them. Kept wondering why Robitussin made me feel so funny till I read the label!

Re: Cough medicine for a diabetic

My husband's Dr. told him to take the Robitussin, think the CF. It says on the back to ask your Dr. if you have certain conditions, and Diabetes is one. Maybe you could ask your pharmacist what would be good.

Good luck, feel better....JJ

Re: Cough medicine for a diabetic

Because my sugar went up anyway when I was sick, I just used the Robitussin for Dry Cough. I found the artificial sweeteners made the cough worse versus the full sugar. Since I didn't take it long, or take much, I compensated by using less other stuff.

Re: Cough medicine for a diabetic

I use Tussionix if I have a bad cough, but it's prescription only. The good part is that you only take 1 teaspoon every 12 hours, so it doesn't have much effect on blood sugar levels.
