Possible pre diabetes & a cold
I am a healthy woman age 49, but have become concerned about diabetes because my father had it. I recently had a fasting result of 101 and have started testing at home. My recent random tests have been 91, 85 & 98. I have a really bad cold now and took some cold medicine (Alka Selzer Plus) about 8 hours before I tested this morning. My result was 111. Is it possible that having a cold and taking the medication made my reading high? That is the highest it's ever been. Can having a cold increase your blood sugar?

Illness and many medications can cause spikes in blood sugar. See what happens as you recover.

Your bs numbers seem to be good, but it is always smart to stay on top of it especially with family history of diabetes. Stress and sickness can raise your bs, as well as medications for colds as most of the liquids have a sugary base to cover the taste. If you still feel concern, definitely talk with your doctor.
