My husband went to the VA and his HG A1c was 5.9 but his FBS was 137. They are telling him he is diabetic. I thought if your HG A1c was under 6, then you were pre diabetic, not diabetic.

That is ridiculous. Definitely get another blood test done, and make sure NO food/drink after midnight. A 5.9 a1c is not indicitive of Diabetes, and should not be medicated for. I would consult and endocrinologist, not a physician, regarding this...

However, a 5.9 A1c is definitely higher than normal so he should start learning how to manage his diet (especially carbohydrate intake) now, and add exercise to his daily routine. If he does this, he may actually be able to prevent the onset of diabetes. If not, he will probably be dealing with full-blown diabetes within a year or so.
