Home meters are not as accurate as lab drawn tests. So if her glucose was elevated, I would trust that rather than the home meter. The next time she or your husband have labs drawn, take the meter along and test at the same time. You will see how accurate the meter is.
In the meantime, it's not enough to just cut sugar. All carbohydrates (anything starchy like rice, potato, bread, pasta) will turn into sugar in the body. Cutting back on that will help the glucose and also help with the weight loss.
