Question What should I do? one Metformin with A1c of 6.5 or 2 Met with A1c of 6.2

At this time, I use only one Metformin per day and my A1c is 6.5 and few months earlier I was using 2 metformins per day and my A1c was 6.2
I would like to know Should I use, one Metformin with A1c of 6.5 or 2 Metformins per day with A1c of 6.2?

I have replaced rice and bread with pasta and it has helped very much with after 2 hour blood sugar numbers.

If you were to cut out some of the carbs (pasta is no better than rice and bread) you could probably achieve the 6.2 without additional meds. That's just a thought though.

Hi Cora,

There is a reason why pasta does not raise your blood sugar as much as rice and bread. One time I read here “the best way to know what food is good for you is to test it after 2 hours” and I did that and difference was hard to believe. Then heard on PBS a doctor was explaining that pasta will not raise your blood sugar as much as bread. because they do not use yeast for making the pasta. Yeast in the bread creates small holes and when you eat the bread juice in your stomach enters those holes and you digest the bread faster and it raises your B.S. but pasta does not get digested as fast as bread.
I checked the Glycemic Index for pasta and bread and they are around 30 and 60 respectively.

Jay

How many mgs. of Metformin are you taking? My A1c was 6.4 over 2 years ago and my Dr. put m on 500 mgs. of Met once per day. So far it has kept my A1C at 6.1-6.3. Give the once per day a try till your next test and see how it goes. Seeing you are also changing your carb intake the once per day just might be enough.

All the best....JJ......

Have you gone over the dosage recommendations with you pc? You need to do that is going over the A1C numbers. It is better to be safe that sorry when it is meds dosing. And see about any other changes in diet. 6.2 is not bad number at all. It means you are doing something right and keep with the changes. Just be sure to talk with the doctor about changes in med dosage. Do not change anything on your own.
