Question A Fter Meal Blood Sugar Testing

I heard somewhere that if one is to get an accurate reading one must consume about 75 grams of sugar and test after two hours - I have three questions (1) IS THIS TRUE? (2) SHOULD I TAKE SUGAR ALONE , DISSOLVED IN PURE WATER FOR EXAMPLE? (3) How many table spoons should I take to equal the 75 grams?

Re: A Fter Meal Blood Sugar Testing

It sounds like you are trying to duplicate a glucose tolerance test to determine diabetes. If you are doing this, you need to test every half hour for 2 or 3 hours to determine how well you handle glucose. Since meters and measuring are inaccurate, I would get this test done by proper medical professionals to get an accurate determination. This test is used only to determine if you have diabetes. If you are simply talking about after meal testing, you don't need 75 grams of sugar. Simply eat your regular meal and test at the 2 hour mark to determine if you ate too many carbs.

If you want to get an accurate blood sugar wading to test how your body handles glucose all you have to do is test your blood sugar level every half hour for about two hours after eating a meal (not snacks). If the results are good your blood sugar should have decreased significantly by the time two hours have passed because your insulin would have let the glucose into your cells and muscles. Consuming 75 grams of sugar does not necessarily mean actual sugar but means the amount of sugar that the meal consists of. This does not mean to actually add sugar to the meal but to make sure that the meal has about 75 grams of carbohydrates in it (75 grams of carb. = 5 servings of carb./ 15 grams = 1 serving). I've been diabetic since I was seven yrs old and this is practically what I understand from what my doctor has told me in the past.

Hope this was helpful
