Definitely sounds like your body is having trouble processing carbs. I've been type 2 for a few years and haven't ever had an A1c over 5.6 or a fasting over the 90s.
I'd start cutting down the carbs, exercising more, and testing blood sugar after meals to see what foods to cut back on.
I was put on Metformin right away, but doctors differ on when to go with meds and what numbers get you a type 2 label. Mine went on any number over 200 during the oral glucose tolerance test means full blown diabetes.
Personally, I wouldn't be happy with an A1c over 6 and I'd definitely ask for Metformin, but you have to educate yourself and decide what your goals are!
