Question Leg swelling

I am a big guy with diabetes, but under control. My A1C ranges from 4.7-5.4 when it's checked every 3 months. I watch what I eat and am losing weight, usually 9-15 lbs every 3-4 months. During the day my lower leg swells very large. I wear a high top boot so the swelling never goes past the boot collar. When I wake up each morning my leg is back to its normal size. Why is this?

Re: Leg swelling

Probably because you're in a horizontal position when you sleep, and you are either sitting or standing during the day. Gravity, in a nutshell.

You're correct about the gravity theory. But my health is fine, as far as BP, glucose, etc. I am sure it's a fluid thing but where is it coming from, and where does it go at night?

Re: Leg swelling

Sodium from your diet is most likely the cause for the swelling.

Yes, gravity does cause fluids to accumulate in the legs. While in bed the kidneys can work more efficiently to remove excess fluids and excreted via urine.

If you sprinkle salt on your foods, eat salty foods, or a lot of starches and sweets, your body will retain more fluids. Restaurant foods contain too much sodium for good health.

An internist told me that "fat" absorbs water like a sponge. Yes, I am overweight.

Wink Re: Leg swelling

95% of my diet is canned vegetables. The only sweets I eat is creamy peanut butter from the jar, no jelly or bread. Sometimes I eat beef jerky. Also, I do sprinkle just a very little bit of "Slap Ya Momma" hot seasoning on my veggies.
