Lack of taste and smell..no appetite

[SIZE=4][COLOR=Red][B][CENTER][IMG] [FONT=Comic Sans MS]I am not sure this is the place to be however...my dad who is 80 years has lost his sense of smell and taste (about 10 years ago) and he has no appetite to eat and just forces himself to eat meals. Has anyone ever heard of this and if so is there anything to be done for it? He takes several meds for his heart problems and had bladder cancer 7 years ago which was treated with a virus similar to TB which was flushed thru his bladder and this is when he noticed that his taste went. The doc's are no help..imagine that...any ideas out there? He sure would love to taste food again...thanks for any help or ideas you can give...

Sometimes supplementing with zinc will help.

Re: Lack of taste and smell..no appetite

I'd agree with the zinc levels.

Pumpkin seeds, pecans, and Brazil nuts are all foods high in it.

Also worth checking if this is any of the medications' side effects. And requesting a similar med without it (the side effects).

Going for lower caloried but very high nutrient levels by much less refined and/or overprocessed foods might help. Though they might be blander tasting, initially.

Loss of appetite itself could be a part of it.

Certain foods are known to enhance digestive powers.

Limiting meals to what can easily be digested could help make the most of the nutrients needed to bring back sense of taste. I believe it's the sense of smell which is much more important in tasting food anyway.
