The FDA allows trans fats [or anything else, for that matter] that amount to less than 0.5 gram per serving to be listed as as 0 trans fats on the Nutrition Facts panel. According to the USDA Web site, consumers may see a few products that list 0 grams trans fat on the label, while the ingredient list will have shortening, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or hydrogenated vegetable oil on it. This means the food contains very small amounts of trans fat per serving.
I knew that business about being able to round down .5 to 0, but I thought in such cases they could not label the product as "trans fat [or whatever] free". Evidently they can.
