Corn bad for dieting?

I don't know if this would go under this board, but not so long ago i heard that corn was actually bad if you were dieting...don't know if this is true or not, but i love corn, and it's a veggie, so shouldn't it be good? anyone know anything more about this?

corn is high in natural sugar and in carbs. Therefore you must limit your intake of it if you want to lose weight. Not all veggies are created equal.

corn is actually very low calorie per weight and full of natural fiber. it is also packed with amino acids like lysine. so while it's probably not a good idea to eat nothing BUT corn on a diet, i don't see any logical reason to avoid it like the plague either.

Are you under the impression that grains are not vegetable? They sure are not animal or mineral.

Anyway, corn is indeed moderately high in sugars, in particular, fructose. It also is a legitimate source of fiber. It is (as usually eaten, even in popocorn)a whole grain, which we often forget, and is of moderate glycemic index.

So, it is hardly a killer to most diets, but it wouldn't be a big help either. And during the first weeks (induction) on an Atkins diet, it would be a definite no-no.

(I'm afraid that whoever said it was high in protein is simply mistaken. An ear of corn has about 2.5 grams of protein, and a can of sweet corn about twice that. Modest amounts. And it is incomplete protein, as I'm sure you know that all grains are--this is the reason to eat them with beans or other protein foods. Lysine is nice, but it is not a substitute for a complete amino acid profile)

hope this answers.

Re: Corn bad for dieting?

Hi, I don't eat alot of corn or starchy veggies because I'm doing WW and they are higher in points. It's SO hard to stay away from them - tho. Good luck! Gwendolyn

Re: Corn bad for dieting?

Hello, I have often hear corn is not good for a diet, because of the starch content, which turns into sugar. I wonder how reliable that is, since everytime I eat corn, it seems to come out in the toilet in whole form. I've noticed that certain foods come out in whole form like fresh whole flax seed, nuts, and corn. I wonder if the body really uses any of it anyhow?

It is the fibrous husk, not the sugars, that passes through the intestine undigested or only partly digested. Almost nothing digests as quickly and thoroughly as sugars and simple starches, I am sorry to say. Corn is not the worst offender, which is why its glycemic index is only middling, but I assure you the sugars do indeed make it into your blood stream. And thence to your thighs.

By the way insoluble fiber is not supposed to digest, except in cows--it stimulates the colon in fact by remaining more or less intact all the way down.

Maybe this is more information than you needed.

Re: Corn bad for dieting?

yes, corn isn't exactly the best fruit/veggie to consume when on a diet. in replace of corn, try to eat broccoli or spinach, veggies full of good carbs.
