Too much soy protien?

Can you over do it with soy protien. I'm a vegetarian and train with weights. If so, what are the results? Digestive disorders to be exact.

Regards,

Moz

Re: Too much soy protien?

Moz,

Too much protein defined as far more than you need to build into body tissue isn't wise beacause when you use protein as food you release lots of nitrogenous wastes that the body considers poisons and must excrete.
But don't worry about any intake less than 150 grams or so (600 calories); being SHORT of protein is worse than eating too much. As a vegetarian, soy will perforce be one of your protein mainstays.

Digestively, uncooked soy is pretty repulsive to the body and VERY hard (or poisonous) on the tummy; but roasted or cooked it is pretty well tolerated...and FERMENTED (tofu, tempeh) it's very easy on the GI tract.
If you take it as the amino acid isolate, maybe watch your amounts somewhat...that form is really not optimal as food.

Re: Too much soy protien?

Hello Zip.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering why all those high protien muscle mass shakes were upseting my tummy. I'll try tofu. I've always been told to take in 1gram per pound of weight. 215 grams seems like alot for me. I'll tone it back a bit. Again, thanks for the reply.

Regards,

Moz

Re: Too much soy protien?

I have heard the formula of 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight (2.2 lbs)... but I don't necessarily think that is a good way to calculate. In your efforts to eat a balanced diet your protein consumption needs to be relevent to the total amount of calories you consume. I recommend eating 25-30% of your total calories as protein. And of course, knowing your total daily caloric needs is critical - start off with a BMR calculator (do a google search) and then do the math. 1 protein gram = 4 calories.

Soy protein specifically is very good for you. It is recommended that you consume at least 25 grams of soy protein daily. I personally don't like tofu, but I love "dry" soy products. There are lots out there now - snacks, protein bars, soy crisps, and just plain roasted nuts. Genisoy and Balance are two brands that I like a lot.

Re: Too much soy protien?

There are lots of claims out there, you really need to evaluate them for what they are worth... I agree that there are many highly processed soy products out there that are just as bad for you as other foods that are highly processed and chemically modified. Its never a good idea to consume these products.

In terms of soy protein effecting hormones - my understanding is that the level you would need to consume for this to be a factor is more than 150 grams of soy protein daily!!! Unless someone is consuming nothing BUT soy, it is highly unlikely that they would consume that much. I would agree that if someone were on a pure liquid diet of soy protein shakes, there might be cause for concern. Eating 20-30 grams of soy protein per day in the form of soy milk, tofu, yogurt, soynuts, or snacks, would actually be quite benefitial.
