Yogurt??

I've been eating Yoplait Light Fat Free Yogurt. The advertisement on the cup says something like "Burn More Fat and Loose More Weight as part of a reduced calorie diet". I've even gone on their website (as the cup says) to read the study that "backs up" this claim. (The study claims that people who ate 2-3 servings of this yogurt each day over an 8-week period lost more weight than people that didn't.) My question is: is yogurt a sensible food choice? I eat one or two 6 oz. cups per day. Each cup has 5 grams of protein, 19 grams of carbs (14g sugar), 20% calcium and vitamin D, 100 calories, no fat, and nearly no cholesterol. Is this too much sugar? I'm not on Atkins or any "fad" diets - just on a reduced calorie diet, trying to get my "ratios" closer to where they should be, and cut out some sugar. Thanks!

I also eat yoplait light yogurt as advised by my dietician. I just tried their new brand called ultra. It has only 5 carbs and very little sugar(5g i think) and it didn't taste bad. When I see my dietician next month i will ask her about the new yoplait, ultra.

Re: Yogurt??

My nutritionist advised me to eat a yogurt every day because it's such a great source of extra calcium. I wouldn't worry about the sugars and carbs because yogurt isn't junk food - it's a very healthy choice for a snack and Yoplait is probably one of the better brands. They have good sugars and carbs, not bad ones, and can lessen chances for osteoporosis and give you more energy throughout the day. You could look into the Ultra like jtu said if you're worried about carbs.

Re: Yogurt??

Yogurt is good. Try to eat plain yogurt though. With more protein than carbs. Like I have yogurt with 0 grams fat, 7 grams protein and 5 grams carbs or so per I don't know how much 100 grams I think.

Re: Yogurt??

Yogurt is a great choice - its typically got a decent balance of protein and carbs, and is low fat or fat free. Its VERY important to read labels when choosing a yogurt... Some of them are VERY bad - really high in sugar and loaded with fat and calories (some are as bad as ice cream!)

Lite yogurts are less sugar, usually they contain a combination of corn syrup and a sugar substitute to cut the sugars and total carbs down (usually in half). And the low fat or fat free yogurts are better for obvious reasons. If you can't handle sugar substitutes, get plain lowfat or fatfree yogurt and flavor it yourself with fresh fruit or other natural toppings.

Breyers has an excellent lite yogurt with some great flavors (key lime and lemon are really good), but it contains aspartame to cut down the sugar and carbs, so proceed with caution.
