I think they are fat free too. If not then there are some that are. Plus they taste great with mustard on them. I'm talking about the little hard one's in the bag. If your dieting then the salt on them isn't too good for you, so find plain ones. If you HAVE to snack then those are the best for you. Eating fruits (not dried) are good too because you have to chew them. Carrots and fat free dressing, celery.....Your body needs some kind of fat too ya know. Good luck.
Pretzels have only one BAD dietary component...WAY TOO MUCH SODIUM.
If you can bear the "baldies" it's a good high carb, fair protein, almost non-fat snack food.
For me it's the salt I crave and thus have to steer clear of the love of my life, chunky salt encrusted Amish Sourdough Pretzels...I retained water just by TYPING that!
I wouldnt' consider them junkfood either, I would choose them over potato chips any day. Yes, their high in sodium but they do make ones that are unsalted, plus I believe for 44 little sticks, your getting about 105 calories with little or no fat. So you can have 2 servings for 200 calories and be satisfied.
If you are wanting something crunch to eat try celery or something. Pretzels aren't very good for you because they are empty calories, lots of sodium, no fiber, carbs, and there are so many other choices for a good snack.
I vote for junk food. Yeah, if you are going to weigh which junk foods are better, pretzels would be near the top of the list. But they are just about 100 percent refined carbohydrates, they provide virtually no nutrition (that's the definition of junk food in my book) except for any enriching (in which case, I'm perfectly capable of taking vitamins myself).
Drink alot of water when you eat them. If your whole diet is high in sodium then I wouldn't eat them. But if your diet is low in sodium, and you want to snack on pretzels, I don't see anything wrong with it cause your body does need some salt, especially if you workout! I eat them all the time, and the rest of my diet is virtually low sodium, plus I workout an hour a day 40-60min 5x a week. BTW, a good amount of water flushes alot of sodium out of your body. Plus, at whole foods, or Giant Eagle, Newman's has organic pretzles made from organic wheat flour!
I do not believe them to be a junk food, but like others said, the sodium in just one serving is completely ridiculous. If you find yourself looking for snacks, possibly try granola bars, fruit snacks, or simply fruit. If you are looking for something with somewhat of a salty taste, check out crackers or things of that sort-possibly crackers that claim to be low in sodium. Although they are low in sodium, they can still give you a salty taste. It's all about reading the labels and knowing what's best for you, and what isn't. Good luck in finding some good snack foods!
I define junk food by eating things like, potatoe chips, ice cream, chocolate (not in moderation) pizza, fried foods, candy, white pasta, white rice, foods loaded with addiditves. Pretzels however, are lower in fat, and yes are higher in sodium but they do advocate pretzels on the slim fast diet, and I think they mention low salted pretzels, I'm not sure. But I think rice cakes is a better option, and I may start replacing my pretzels with rice cakes, great idea Losec!
I say dont eat the pretzels after about halfway through your day. Its a "bad carb". Just like white bread or white rice. It will cause you to gain weight. But in my opinion eating a few of them earlier in the day wont hurt.
