Getting Fiber

Hi everyone,

I posted this in another forum but it's probably more appropriate here.

I get around 18g of Fiber a day from a fiber breakfast. I will be traveling soon and can't take my fiber breakfast with me obviously. I don't want to have to take many, many pills of metamucil to get this amount while I am traveling. Is there some really good fiber source -- a big pill or something -- that would give me a lot of fiber in a small dosage/without much work?

I don't know about pills but I saw a commercial this morning for some sort of "All Bran" bars. So you can take your fiber on the go with you.

Robert,

You can make sure that at 2 meals of your day you have legumes. It's a rare restaurant that doesn't offer a bean, pea or lentil soup.

Eat oatmeal for breakfast - you can get this in most restaurants and hotels. 1 cup has 4 grams of fiber.

Another tip - pack a box of triscuit crackers in your suitcase - and carry some with you in a ziplock during the day. I think 7 crackers has 3 grams of fiber.

You can also bring some roasted soy nuts - 1/4 cup serving has 3 grams of fiber.

Eat an apple every day - 4 grams of fiber (eat the skin too).

Always get a baked potato with your dinner - an average size potato has 6 grams of fiber if you eat the skin.

This all adds up to 20 grams, not to mention any beans, veggies, and bread you may have with your meals.

Oh, I forgot to mention... skip the OTC pills and powders. Get your fiber from food. Much better!
