Tuna ??

I eat tuna everyday for lunch...I put it in a spinach wrap with some tomatoes and onions. What is the best kind of tuna to use. The stuff I bought (I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head) seems very oily when I open it up. Previously, the other brand I bought wasn't. Any recommendations on what is/isn't good?

Re: Tuna ??

You're probably getting tuna packed in OIL when what you really want to be getting is tuna packed in SPRING WATER. Make sure you read the label. My favorite kind is Starkist solid white packed in spring water.
Tuna's great for you and oh so tasty...keep on eating it!

Re: Tuna ??

Thanks for the tips. I guess I should be reading the labels a lot more closely. Why isn't it good to eat tuna everyday? I eat it during the week at work, not usually on weekends.

Re: Tuna ??

How ironic that I'm eating tuna at my desk and came across this thread. Well... I eat Chicken of the Sea brand.. I have found it's worth the money. Tuna packed in oil is tastier to me, however I do the packed in water. I have never heard of the mercury content in it from eating it every day. I only went to doing that to do a protein diet. Believe me more protein keeps my cravings down. I can really tell a different within days when I've not had enough of it. Is this possible, or in my head?

Re: Tuna ??

Ok, so I was about to post how unhealthy it is to eat Tuna everyday, due to reports of high mercury levels. But I decided to check before I spoke, and it turns out that you would have to eat A LOT of tuna to ever get to high enough levels to harm yourself.

That being said, I would definitly recomend buying only white albacore packed in water. The oil kind, besides being really gross and slimy (IMO) is very high in fat (7g in oil vs 2.5g in water) plus, use low fat or fat free mayonaise (heartsmart is a fave of mine).

Also, from personal experience, you might get sick of it if you eat it EVERY DAY! I used to do just that, and now I cant stand to it (except tuna steaks yum!), which is too bad, because it is very good for you! Try a low fat recipe for chicken salad and substitite that once in awhile for some variety

Re: Tuna ??

tuna everyday isnt bad..the canned tuna varieties arent really affected by the mercury, only the albacore is (from what i remember). Tuna is a very healthy lunch, and you CAN have it every day as long as you get enough of other nutrients, etc in over the course of a week. This means making sure you get other proteins in, such as legumes (beans, lentils, etc), chicken, pork, red meat (for iron), etc. Also make sure you get enough dairy, fruits, veggies and of course carbs- because contrary to the crazy beliefs nowadays everyone NEEDS carbs. Just try to pick healthier ones, like whole grain breads, brown rice/pasta when you can, potatoes, etc.

Re: Tuna ??

I know certain weightlifters that will go through two whole cans of tuna a day. Still, I wouldn't recommend eating tuna everyday. I usually eat a whole can five times a week or so. Like someone else said, variety is always nice. I wouldn't want to get sick of tuna and end up hating it just because I eat it everyday.

Re: Tuna ??

Just a suggestion--if you want to vary your wraps, I've been putting olive oil and balsamic vinegar on a wrap with spinach, black olives, mung bean sprouts and sometimes a slice of mozzarella. Yummy!!! I eat like three at a time!

Flgirl, that sounds really good! It's getting me hungry just thinking about it but it's too early for lunch. Thanks for the suggestion.
